BH Bowman Studios • Abstract Expressionism • Canvas Design About Barbara Largely self-taught, Bowman draws much of her inspiration from nature and her extensive travels. Growing up in Colorado instilled a deep-rooted appreciation of the vibrant, majestic colors of Southwestern landscapes. Her independent nature led her on solo trips beginning at age 19 to Europe where she spent time painting, visiting the museums of the great masters and mingling with young international artists.
Early in her career, Bowman painted in the figurative style, doing detailed realistic images on glass and also as a wall muralist highly sought after by both private and corporate clients worldwide.
Later, she adopted the Abstract Impressionistic style of the Color-Field genre employed by American artist Mark Rothko. Bowman became impassioned with Rothko and his fervent desire for people to see drama in his works. She expresses herself similarly, reflecting her outspokenness, her sense of adventure and passion for life.
Bowman pays vigorous attention to balanced, brilliant hues, depth and expanding dimensions in mostly dual color fields. Her colors are intricately woven and meticulously layered one on top of the other to create a visual journey. Her pieces literally jump off the wall.
Her approach and application evokes an impulse for the observer to draw near and study her works at close range. In doing so, subtleties are revealed that at first might be overlooked. She is dedicated to intense color, luminosity and a sense of limitless space, while merging complexity and simplicity into modest color block combinations.
"Personal expression is full of complexities. It's our bright side, our dark side and the connection between them. And it's how we relate to our surroundings. Ultimately, it's about simplifying the complexities to find the perfect balance of who we really are."
